Windows Vista: I’m Breaking up with You

section: windows, for your questions: KezNews forum, 27.2.2007

Tip: Click here to update all your PC's outdated drivers

No, seriously. When I know I have time, I’m “upgrading” from Windows Vista to Windows XP.

I stand by my original assertion that the shipping version of this OS is late beta, at best. I realize that other enthusiasts are leaving Windows altogether (and leaping instead to Apple’s OS X), but there’s not yet enough momentum behind my willingness to do that. I’ll leave the installs of Vista 32 and 64 on this PC, but I’ll spend most (if not all) of my time back in tried-and-true Windows XP.

I’ll give Vista a second chance when the first service pack is released later this year, but until then…

1. My scanner doesn’t really work (Hewlett-Packard Laserjet 3052). HP hasn’t caught up with support yet, and software updates won’t be available until SP1 time-frame. The software works like a charm in XP - amazingly well, as a matter of fact.

2. Windows Movie Maker crashes on a regular basis.

3. My IPFax software doesn’t work (the driver will likely never be updated to be Vista-compliant). Never, EVER caused me a problem in XP. I need this software to work, and dual-booting to use this is not an option.

4. I still can’t get my Lifecam to work, but wound up purchasing the vastly superior Logitech QuickCam Ultra Vision (puts Microsoft’s new webcam software AND hardware to shame).

5. On the same machine (AMD Quad FX), XP trumps Vista in terms of performance. I don’t have specific benchmarks on hand, but I can tell you the difference is quite palpable. This is even with most of Vista’s eye candy tuned to a dull roar. We’ll see if it runs just as quickly when everything’s reinstalled there. I only discovered this after rebooting to try my scanner in XP - blazing differences, similar tasks.

6. NVIDIA chipsets and video cards. Need I say more?

7. I simply can’t get to my OS X from Vista (or mount a WebDAV server).

8. Copernic Desktop Search, a far superior desktop search client, either doesn’t like Vista or Outlook 2007 - not sure which, yet. Either way, I can’t run it right now - and the Windows Desktop Search tool is still as lame as ever (sorry, Brandon). I’ll miss the new Start Menu, but I think there’s similar third-party software that’ll keep me happy in the meanwhile.

9. Explorer keeps losing my view settings. THIS IS DRIVING ME UP THE FARKING WALL! Now, I realize that XP suffers from this problem as well, but it’s never been this bad. There are so many new options that it’s difficult to reset each window’s view every time - including column headers, which are now permanently stuck on “Tags” and “Date Taken” (even though I may not be in a folder applicable to these fields).

10. My workaday software still seems to suffer from weird quirks now and again. I really don’t have the time or patience to wait for each developer to catch up just so I can go on living my life. All these little annoyances are starting to add up to one major headache. Instead of detailing each one separately (and extending this list exponentially), I’m just wrapping all of ‘em together into one point.

Sorry, I… I gave Vista a real chance. I just can’t use it as my primary OS anymore. It’s NOT horrible at its core (by any stretch of the imagination). If all of your hardware and software are fully baked, you’re good to go - but that’s not the world I live in. I will continue to recommend Windows Vista for some users, mind you. I wish I could take the best parts of Vista and bring them back with me to XP. I’m still more than willing to help Microsoft improve Windows and get the message out to users, but I simply can’t sacrifice my own time and productivity without benefits in clear sight. I’m begging Microsoft and all of my hardware and software vendors to make Windows better for me. Until then…

The Whoa starts now.

Vista

By Anon on 27.02.2007 - 18:02
i'm not s microsoft fan,and actually dislike them. but chris pirillo is blaming things that really aren't vista's fault. he should be bitching at the companies that make his hardware for not putting out drivers for vista.

So true

By Bobby on 27.02.2007 - 18:02
i still haven't had one problem with vista and i have had it installed since the rtm came out.

Vista

By ZERO on 27.02.2007 - 19:02
i went back to xp not because of problems just the lack of support. i've not encountered any serious problems except for creative who will not release vista compliant drivers for my mp3 player. the reason it's too old but i like the damn thing. my laptop manufacturer haven't released any compatible drivers or programmes that shipped with xp. so i'll stick with xp.

Eye Sore

By Melinda Gates on 27.02.2007 - 19:02
i have vista installed, but ouside the eye candy xp is still the best, fastest.

Explorer keeps losing my view settings.

By Rudi on 27.02.2007 - 19:02
yes. have the same problem....

vista ultimate and explorer keeps losing my view settings... how can this be?

MS are lazy F**ERS

By Your Mother on 27.02.2007 - 20:02
they do a half ass job on everything, if they listen to people, their products and they themselves would be liked much more.

vista is better

By WeirdClayJ on 27.02.2007 - 21:02
it preforms better for me, and every thing of mine works, except my dell printer, but that is dell's fault. and i have an hp printer that works fine so i have no problem there. i've used vista 64 since rtm and have had absolutely no problems with it.

XP is more stable and much faster and settled

By Windows 3.1 Lover on 27.02.2007 - 22:02
i too went back to windows xp in order to get rid of all the problems i had with using windows vista... vista is only appealing. i wish microsoft had developed xp much further instead of vista thing.

Vista vs XP

By Wyodad on 27.02.2007 - 23:02
i too have been running a dual boot system with vista and xp sp2. i started running this in july with the vista beta2 and ran every iteration until rc2. i bought ultimate on jan. 30 and haven't looked back once. vista is infinitely more stable than xp, runs my sli configured nvidia cards without a hitch, and definately runs office 2007 and arcview 9.2 faster than xp does. one thing i have noticed is those folks who pirated the software by downloading the original rtm version and enterprise versions have a lot more problems than i ever have had. the retail version is great, stable, and fun to use. you folks who think you can get vista on the cheap (read free) get what you pay for. i have been programming and working with computers for over 30 years and vista is definately all and more than it was promised to be.

Oh my, tables have turned

By Bob on 28.02.2007 - 00:02
wow so now linux supports more hardware than vista. how the tables turn... that is seriously funny because all the windows people laughing at linux for poor hardware support. i will wait until sp1a before i try vista on my home computer. will stick with xp and linux until then and maybe after too. :)

Vista vs XP

By Nila on 28.02.2007 - 00:02
i've got both setup on dual boot and running a brand new high spec system (e6400 c2d, 2gb ram, 7600gt) and i can easily say that although vista is fun and 'new' and different, i tend to always go back to xp in the end just because its smoother to use and it definitely feels easily as fast as vista if not slightly faster.
the software support for it also at the moment is far better.
sure vista will be the one everyone uses in the future, but right now xp is a far better choice for mr joe average.

wireless networks atheros

By Nikolaos on 28.02.2007 - 00:02
i have configured and declared my wifi net as private. but everytime vista searches to determine if the network is public or private. so i have to wait for 5 min so vista to let me set it again.
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamazing.

try dual partition hard disc for xp and vista

By DCRJ on 28.02.2007 - 01:02
yup, i have the same problems with vista, companies that haven't updated their drivers with vista, hardware and software incompatibilities etc. it's always a good thing to have dual partitions in your hard disc, with xp and vista installed thus getting the best of both worlds.

printing in vista via network printer (OMG!!) + etc, vista bloat.

By it kills me! on 28.02.2007 - 01:02
whenever i try to print something on vista, office 2007 word the printer page opens up and takes minutes to connect to my printer and if i dare to change any setting on the printer it takes ages. in xp this is a matter of seconds.

also in order to change the background wallpaper u have to go through a lot of bs..

everything is so confusing and complex and slow.

and why the hell would we need to get a better computer configuration? what the hell? u do your job right and let vista run on less ram, less cpu!! even though i've closed a lot of services and closed all the visuals, it is frigging slow.
i love my xp and went back to it. back to normal!!!

drivers are another issue. drivers take up 2 gigs or more in vista and people still complain about drivers :)
ow + 10gig of hdd space?? what the hell. who wanted those stupid movies and pictures and musirc. i have half a tb of hdd but i don't want vista crap getting into any of it..

One "Problem"

By Bob on 28.02.2007 - 02:02
that i have to go to slep from the login screen and back up again and login. otherwise the internetconnection doesn't work. i know that people have problems going from sleep with no connection but i have the opposite problem. otherwise everything work better than with xp.

No Turning Back!

By starams5 on 28.02.2007 - 02:02
i am pleased with vista as well. sure it still has its problems just like the first release of xp. but its time to stop crying and move on. example: some of my executables kept losing its association, okay, how do i resolve this....make problem executables read only. my point is, a computer is just like any other game. win the game. as for uncompatible software, apapt. use alternative apps until your favorite catches up. drivers, i agree with others in the forum, dont blame vista. i've been expermenting with beta versions of vista since they first started appearing (p2p). there is no excuse for these sorry bastards not to have been ready for the retail release of vista. i have 2 pcs with same specs with the exception of the soundcards. no x-fi fatality drivers from creative(shitty beta only). again, no excuse. still running xp on that pc for this reason. other pc is running vista ultamate and i must say that i am moving foward....vista is here to stay.

patience! just have patience.

Vista vs XP

By Wes on 28.02.2007 - 03:02
well, all i can say, is for ppl just starting with pc's that never used one before, i have notice pick up on vista faster than xp, and have less problems on the internet (spyware related) but for us main stream ppl i think vista should have gone through more testing.

about drivers

By Passeryby on 28.02.2007 - 07:02
i'm only thinking of this as a thought, no real evidence/backround info to back it up but...

seems to me win2k/winxp basically shared most drivers for add-on(like usb) devices, win2k started feb 2000 and winxp ends jan 2007

almost 7 years, for a company to rewrite drivers for all that time, shoot most companies stop making drivers after 3~5 years after release.

winxp was all about pnp, plug and play... vista is about hope they still make drivers for this thing(its for security -m$)

i agree with linux has some great driver support(provided by 3rd parties)for older devices, as many as 1,000 printer drivers rolled into one thats pretty amazing considering i have to find 6cds that has a driver for a discontinued/unsupported product (hp/dell/ect) if using windows.

(only use linux as a print/file server, since its legally free)

Wait for SP1

By Alonzo on 28.02.2007 - 08:02
i had the same problems when xp first came out.no drivers, not enough tests, incompatible software, etc.unless you have a new computer or are willing to buy all new harware that's vista ready, then you should have no problem.i however will not use any version of windows vista until sp1 comes out or all updates and bugs are worked out.until now with sp2 for xp out, win xp is better than ever.all i can say is those who are already using vista, just wait for the updates & fixes that ms will put out someday soon. i'm finally happy with xp but it's just a matter of time before ms ends support for xp and everybody goes towards vista for everything.oh well, only time will tell. until then, i recommend staying with xp...

Point No 9...

By Annoyed on 28.02.2007 - 14:02
that drives me nuts as well, but what can i do? programmers needs to be re-educated, i think. they think you only views photos and videos in your pc, and that dumb...

from the east to the west vista is the best !

By jr head on 28.02.2007 - 15:02
vista rock

Something no one says about Vista.

By pr75 on 28.02.2007 - 17:02
the os has no video hardware accelaration support at all. so remember those hd videos you play on xp flawlessly? forget them on vista!!! i think ati and nvidia have been trying to come up with new drivers that will bypass this issue but until now, no good news about it. even 3d applications run slower on vista. i downloaded the energy screensaver and loaded it on xp and it runs smooth and it runs slower on vista. i have read in some forums that users with very fast computers are experiencing the same problems. so why upgrade to something that will make the things you run normally slower. it doesn't make sense to me. microsoft and the hardware companies really have to look into that issue. if they are trying to get us to buy new hardware that's a slap on the face of us consumers.

I’m Breaking up with You.....SO!

By starams5 on 28.02.2007 - 19:02
i mean no dis-respect to those of you with slow computers but you seem to be the only ones complaining. take the article that started all this for example:

1. scanner doesn't work, hp......theres his problem right there, he has an hp. i started with an hp printer, nothing but junk. switched to canon and i love it. works well with vista.

2. windows movie maker crashes....who would try that shit anyway, what do you expect from 3rd party freeware. i deleted the icon from my start menu without even opening the app.

3. my fax software doesen't work......there is a new methoid out, its called email.

4. i still can't get my lifecam to work....get over it and go to walmart and buy another.

5. on the same machine (amd quad fx)....dont say anymore, try intel my friend. those hot running amd's aren't worth a damn (sorry all you amd users, just calling it like i see it)
6. nvidia chipsets and video cards. need i say more?......yes you should say more. my nvidia runs sweet on vista.

8. copernic desktop search......its google, google, google, google.

9. explorer keeps losing my view settings.....now i must say i share your frustration on this, made me mad as hell. but i adapted (didn't have much choice) and moved on. it didn't take long to get used to the "list" view and now i'm okay with it.

sorry, i… i gave vista a real chance.......dont sound to me like you gave vista a chance at all. vista is not xp and the sooner people realize this the better they will be off.

vista is kool

By paul3100 on 01.03.2007 - 00:03
i love vista, sure it has its problems but so did xp when it first came out and there were loads of people moaning then too!

vista is far more stable than xp and so far i haven't had to reboot or pull the plug due to freezing of the os :-)

sure there are some programs and hardware that don't work but thats called progress!. these programs will either get updated to run on vista or die and be replaced by better ones.

its true as someone above said that most people here who complain have older/slower pc's and printers and so on and should not say vista is slow and crap when in fact its there hardware!

upgrade your pc and hardware or buy new like everyone else has had too. i spent over £1000/$1900 upgrading my pc last febuary and i score 5.9 on all windows scores exept the cpu which is 4.8 and have no problems at all.

i do agree xp seems faster than vista for simple things such as opening and closing folders and so on but thats about it, vista is dx10 where as xp isn't and there is going to be games and apps only compatible with visa and so will run smoothly as so much already does.

so lets stop saying vista is rubbish/garbage when its not its just your old museum pieces (old pc's) that are not up to the job.

paul

Right on, starams5!

By anon1080 on 01.03.2007 - 05:03
i totally, agree with your points starams5. and yeah, i got used to the list thing, too...kinda like it now actually...reminds me of the dos days. haha.

one complaint though that no one has mentioned on this forum: the whole com surrogate error crap. in case you guys don't know, when viewing divx files in windows explorer, the previews cause some sort of com surrogate error that is extremely annoying. even with the divx 6.5.1 update to fix the problem, i still randomly get the error with some other apps.

To anon1080

By starams5 on 01.03.2007 - 06:03
maybe this may help and maybe it won't. i had a simular problem when i passed my mouse over avi files some time ago. i would get an error message as well. i traced the problem to haali splitter. to resolve the issue i went to haali splitter config/options/interface/and disabled "display error messages". may be you have another codec thats causing these probems and you can take simular steps to resolve your problems.....good luck.

starams5

Hmmm. Ok.

By pr75 on 01.03.2007 - 08:03
well i see lots of people defending vista and yes, it's prettier, more stable etc. but if you're gonna relly on computer power just to achieve what xp already does that's backwards thinking in my opinion. i think they spent years developing this os and i do have a fairly fast and new computer, all my hardware is vista compatible and i have run into some issues that i can't live without. so i "imaged it" and upgrade to xp. i will try vista again when these issues are adressed. for all the vista defenders out there... if you have to chash out $400 for an os it'd better work flawlessly!

Its ALL Micrososfts fault

By Tye on 09.03.2007 - 00:03
driver compatibility is microsofts fault. the did not have to change their driver model to create a new os. they could have kept the xp/2000 model and simply created windows vista around it. (they spent years getting plug & play perfected and then ditch it.)

bottom line: windows vista is microsofts attempt to put the tech market on reset. rebuy all ne software, all new hardware, new everything.. (yea right.)

i still love and use windows2000 it never crashes and simply has run soo good, i never upgraded to vista. when it breaks, i'll go linux. but i'm not simply following the crowd, i need my pc to actuall *function*, not become a silly 3d graphics show. - i guess people who upgrade to vista are simply internet browser junkies.

i run a small business and i'm a software developer.. i don't have time to play silly games with drivers and compatibility issues. this issues should be solved before the product is marketed.

Vista still has problems - maybe fixed in SP1

By Andy Grainger on 16.03.2007 - 12:03
well i bought a copy of vista ultimate edition about three weeks ago and did a fresh install on my system. (32-bit 3.2ghz p4 with 2gb ram, 500gb sata2 hd)

i found quite a few annoyancies after everything was up and running. major gripe was when transfering a folder with few hundred small files (only couple of megs) to my network server. this took under a minute in xp but in vista - started estimating the time to transfer then estimated the time at over 30 minutes!!! (down to about 50kbps) what the hell!? i tried disabling remote differential compression but this still made no difference. if you try and transfer one or two large files they copy in an acceptable time - it's just when you copy a large amount in one go. i do this often because of my web design line of work. after some research it appears to be linked to new smb2 support in vista. most server oss are using smb1 and the new vista smb2 screws up when trying to do downwards compatibility! :-(

another annoyance for me was vista's sound card driver support. i tried both my motherboard's integrated ac'97 and a dedicated c-media sound card. both had choppy sound with the latest ms update drivers installed.

so sadly (or gladly in my case) i am going back to xp sp2 which i find to be fast, stable and reliable.

until they can sort out the problems i won't be going back to vista. i do like the new gui and features but most of them are just cosmetic. (and dare i say it - imitate improvements in macos x and linux!)
catch you later,

andy
